This rare wild cat was seen in Iran!

According to the news agency, “Seyed Reza Nooranian” said in this regard: In February of this year, environmentalists and nature lovers saw Pallas’s cat in the Kalmand Bahdran Reserve in the city of Mahrez, and environmentalists were able to shoot a video. and a picture of her.

Pallas’ cat (scientific name: Felis Manul) is a small wild cat native to Central Asia. This animal is slightly larger than a domestic cat, standing around 60 cm (not including its 25 cm tail) and weighing an average of 3.6 kg. The color of the body hair is light gray or dark yellow with vertical stripes, which are sometimes not visible among the thick and dense body hair.

This cat has different shapes that make it different from other cats. The round eyes of this animal are its most prominent feature. Her legs are short, her back is relatively large, and her hair is long and thick.

Pallas’ cat lives in the steppes up to 4000 meters. It goes hunting at dawn and dusk and feeds on rodents, pikas, mice, rabbits and birds. Its habitat overlaps with that of the Afghan pika or large rodent communities. In some places, it also feeds on common partridges.

Iran is the western home of Pallas’ cat. This animal is mostly observed in northeastern Iran and there are sporadic reports of its presence in the center and northwest. In 2008, a camera trap recorded an image of this species in Khajir National Park and established the presence of this species in Central Alborz. In 1392, Pallas’ cat was caught alive by hunters in the city of Bapt. Then, in September 2015, the deputy for the natural environment in Semnan province announced the sighting of Pallas’s cat collar with his cub in the Khshilik Shahrud shelter.

During the Leopard Project in northeastern Iran, a camera set up by the Iranian Cheetah Society in Sarigol National Park in the fall of 2014 captured some photos of Pallas’ cats. Also, in December 2014, one of the cameras installed in Suluq National Park recorded a beautiful picture of a Pallas’ cat in this area. Also, most reports of Pallas’ cat are associated with dead or live animals taken by herders at high altitudes. There is very little information about the feeding, habitat, reproduction, and social behavior of this animal and the killing of pack dogs appears to be an important threat to the persistence of Pallas’ cat in Iran.
