In a study of 171,616 British participants with no history of cancer or heart disease, people who drank unsweetened coffee had a 16 to 21 percent lower risk of death.
Additionally, those who drank fewer than four cups of coffee a day were 29 to 31 percent less likely to die.
This study showed lower results between artificially sweetened coffee and a reduced risk of death.
All participants were followed over seven years to determine whether coffee consumption affected their overall risk of death from cancer and heart disease.
Health experts agree that drinking coffee can have health benefits. According to the Cleveland Clinic in the US, coffee is a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants that help improve mood and memory with caffeine.
If combined with coffee drinking, it can help reduce the risks of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, liver disease and some types of cancer.
On the downside, caffeine can cause potential side effects, such as increased anxiety and anger. This can have a negative effect on the quality of your sleep.
Caffeine is addictive too, if your stamina increases and you don’t drink coffee for a day or two or try to quit smoking completely, annoying withdrawal symptoms like headaches, irritability and fog may await.
In addition, if you regularly drink sweet coffee, especially drinks made at your local coffee shop, be sure to drink it daily as it is high in sugar and calories.
Whether you drink your coffee with black or a little sweetener, if you drink one or two cups a day in moderation, you will likely have long-term benefits. A little sugar or a sugar substitute in coffee won’t hurt you, but be careful not to overdo it.
