All about Cochlear Implant in Iran

Sound is a wish for deaf children and their families. A dream come true for some of these kids with cochlear implants and their silent world can be colored with sound…

According to the informants, One of the achievements and promises of medical science for deaf children is hearing that leads them to a normal life with the gift of hearing. Cochlear implantation began in our country in 1372, and since that year more than 16,000 cochlear implantation cases have been performed. It means giving a voice to the children who have no voice in their lives.

Currently, with the steps taken in developing cochlear implant centers in the country, the number of centers has reached 15, and efforts are being made to provide access to these services for deaf patients across the country.

At the same time, the issue of cochlear implantation has recently received attention from governments, and the National Cochlear Implant Development Project was launched in September to facilitate the acceleration and management of deaf patients who are candidates for cochlear implantation. this year. This project has two main goals. Accelerating cochlear implant procedures and reducing the waiting list for these procedures, in addition to reducing the cost of cochlear implants to zero for patients. Therefore, with the beginning of the national cochlear implant revolution and the rapid move of the Board of Trustees to save money in treating prosthetic patients, the waiting list for cochlear implantation decreased to zero, and at the same time, it brought the cost to the patients. free.

According to officials of the Board of Trustees of Currency Savings in Patient Affairs, in 1400, 1430 cochlear implants were performed in one year, while 1209 prostheses were delivered in the first six months of 1401 to the centers, which is the expected number will be and will increase to 1800 until End of year prosthetics.

Of course, it should be noted that according to the statistics of the Ministry of Health, according to state statistics, out of every thousand live births, two children are completely and profoundly deaf. Now the number of births in our country in the past years has reached between one million and one million and 300 thousand births, and as such, approximately 2000 to 2700 deaf children are born. Of course, this number may be more or less depending on the circumstances. It is now said that 40 to 60 percent of these children suffer from transplant conditions. Accordingly, the Ministry of Health announces that with the implementation of the national cochlear implant development plan, the waiting period for cochlear implantation in deaf children will not be long, and eligible patients will be operated quickly.

Conditions for cochlear implantation for deaf children

According to the ERGE Board of Trustees publication Savings in Patient Therapy, when a child is born deaf, he or she may have another abnormality that does not allow a cochlear implant. For example, in a cochlear implant, a device must be placed inside the ear, but in some children, the ear is not fully formed and instead there is inactive tissue that does not allow the device to be inserted. At the same time, there must be healthy nerve pathways when the prosthesis is placed inside the ear. In some children, these neural pathways are problematic or absent at all, so these children are not candidates for transplantation. On the other hand, when a cochlear implant is performed for a child, the child must participate in speech therapy sessions. Therefore, he must have a minimum IQ to learn. Children with severe mental retardation may benefit from cochlear implants.

At the same time, every unused organ in the body loses its function over time. Among the neural pathways present, neural pathways are formed from birth in contact with environmental stimuli. When the neural pathway is not used, it gradually wears off and stops working. Therefore, children who are recommended for cochlear implantation should do so as soon as possible. Of course there should be a minimum such as proper weight etc. Also, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Health, the minimum age for cochlear implants used to be 1 year, but now they have lowered this age slightly in the new scientific bodies. On the other hand, at the age of four, better responses are obtained with cochlear implants. Cochlear implants also work after four years, but they require more work and are less likely to be successful. But there have been successful cases in the country for more than four years. In any case, the golden age of snail farming is said to last four years.
