Poland wants a rotating and permanent American presence

A Polish official said today (Thursday) that the Polish foreign minister will press in the United States to keep the American forces permanently.

According to Reuters, the statement came on the eve of his visit to Washington in the coming days by Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau.

The administration of US President Joe Biden announced, on Wednesday, that in the midst of the crisis with Russia over Ukraine, it will deploy about 3,000 US troops to Eastern Europe in the coming days. The move is said to protect NATO allies from potential leaks during a possible Russo-Ukrainian war in the region.

According to the Polish Minister of Defense and the Pentagon, about 1,700 soldiers enter Poland, but their deployment is temporary.

“It is natural for Polish diplomacy to try to expand the presence of allies in the form of permanent rotation,” Poland’s deputy foreign minister told Reuters. The current security situation means that this policy needs strengthening.

The Polish foreign minister is scheduled to travel to Washington on Thursday to meet tomorrow with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to discuss the timing and location of US forces in Poland and possible sanctions against Russia.
