The head of the Tehran City Council attended this meeting and emphasized that our scientific strength in general issues, especially crisis management and risk control, is acceptable and desirable. He said: We must be strong in executive management as well as in theoretical issues so that we can increase our preparedness to face earthquakes.
According to the Culture and Society Group of the Ana Science and Technology News Agency, the first joint meeting of earthquake engineering officials and professors in the form of forming a working group to increase the resistance of structures against earthquakes was held in Tehran in the presence of Mehdi Chamran, head of Tehran City Council, Seyyed Mohammad Aghmeri, council member, Tehran field professor, members of Tehran Municipality, as well as Tehran Municipality deputies. In the building of the Islamic Council of Tehran City Council, the attendees discussed and exchanged views by proposing discussions and questions.
Mehdi Chamran, Chairman of the City Council of Tehran, while attending this meeting, stressing that our scientific strength in general issues, especially crisis management and risk control, is acceptable and desirable, and said: We must be strong in executive management as well as in theoretical issues so that we can increase our preparedness to face earthquakes.
He continued, “Unfortunately, we do not have a good performance in the executive field, especially in the security issue, and if a 6-magnitude earthquake occurs in Tehran, we will witness a lot of damage.”
Criticizing the fact that unfortunately the city’s constructions are not well-designed, the head of the Tehran City Council emphasized: Part of the increase in the safety of constructions is due to the type of building designs, for example, we saw countless damages in the Bam earthquake, but we saw an old mosque that was not damaged much, and this indicates that its design is preliminary.
He mentioned other important factors to increase the safety and strength of buildings against earthquakes, while paying attention to the correct location, rebuilding and renovating worn-out structures, and implementing on the basis of scientific principles and foundations, and emphasized: In Tehran, with diverse buildings, we must see the basic principles of safety more carefully and try to improve them.
Jamran considered that holding these joint working groups between officials and technical professors would be effective in exchanging information and laying the foundations for dealing with natural hazards, especially events such as earthquakes, and stressed the continuation of these meetings in an intensive and graceful manner.
