After a few years of severing relations between Tunisia and Damascus, Muhammad al-Mahdabi, as ambassador to Tunisia, presented his credentials to the Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad. Al-Miqdad stressed the importance of the meeting between the presidents of Syria and Tunisia in Jeddah, referring to the efforts of Western countries to create division among Arab countries and sow differences between them.

This step was to correct the historical mistake made by the Tunisian government in 2012 by hosting the so-called conference of countries friendly to Syria.
